Our History
Arundel Group RDA was founded in 1979 by Joy Leggett of Arundel Riding Centre. Joy’s daughter Alison now runs the stables and grandson Rory is an instructor and helps generally around the yard.

Joy and Alison have always been extremely generous allowing us to use their horses and ponies and also the facilities. We are indebted to them as without their continued support the Group would not exist.
Right from the very first lesson in 1979 we took riders from the Lavinia Norfolk Centre, a specialist unit for the disabled at nearby Angmering School and to this day we give priority to children from the Centre.
Her Grace Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk (after whom the Lavinia Norfolk Centre is of course named) was President of the Riding for the Disabled Association from its inception in 1969 and provided local support to Joy and has visited the Group many times to make presentations to riders.

The Princess Royal
Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal was Patron of the Association and took over the role of President in 1985.

In 2014, on the occasion of Arundel Group’s 35th anniversary we were honoured by a visit from the Princess Royal. Our riders put on a special display for Her Royal Highness and she chatted freely to them afterwards and presented them all with commemorative rosettes. It was a truly memorable occasion marked by a plaque now displayed in the Riding Centre garden.
