      Did you know ? ............

Today we still measure the power of our cars in horsepower.

      Measuring ...................

      Picture
Each term we measure ourselves  in metres and centimetres to ensure we have the right pony; and check that our stirrup leathers are the right length.

We measure a horses height in HANDS. A hand is 20 cms - about the width of a man's hand.

      Horse or Pony ? ..............

      Picture
So we measure a horse in HANDS.

We measure our height from the ground to the top of our head. We measure a horse from the ground to the top of their WITHERS.

The withers are the shoulder just where the mane stops (in front of the saddle.)

So is it a horse ? or a pony ?

A horse is more than 14.2 hands high.
A pony is 14.2 hands or less.

      Maze Puzzle ......................

      Picture
Help the boy lead his horse up the mountain.

      1. Click on the smiley face
      2. Print the maze.

      What can a horse see ? ...........................................

      Picture
A horse or pony can see nearly all the way around them - without moving their head. How far can you see if you keep your head still ?
They cannot see the area right behind them.
This is why we must be careful not to walk behind a horse or pony.
A horse or pony's eyes are on the side of their head. So they cannot see the end of their nose. They cannot see the food they eat ! - isn't that strange ?
