Did you know  ? ........

The horse produces one thousand movements in three dimensions every ten minutes. The therapeutic advantage of a horse's movement to the rider is of the continuous flow of movement through the rider's body.

Measuring ...................

Picture
Each term we measure ourselves  in metres and centimetres to ensure we have the right pony and check that our stirrup leathers are the right length.

We measure a horses height in HANDS. A hand is 20 cms - about the width of a man's hand.

Horse or Pony ? ..............

Picture
So we measure a horse in HANDS.

We measure our height from the ground to the top of our head. We measure a horse from the ground to the top of their WITHERS.

The withers are the shoulder just where the mane stops (in front of the saddle.)

So is it a horse ? or a pony ?

A horse is more than 14.2 hands high.

A pony is 14.2 hands or less.

Riding Holidays

Picture
RDA National Office organises RDA riding holidays every year which provide fantastic opportunities for riders to improve their riding and learn stable management away from home. If anyone is interested please talk to Lizzie.

Today we still measure the power of our cars in horsepower.

What can a horse see ? ...........................................

Picture
A horse or pony can see nearly all the way around them - without moving their head. How far can you see if you keep your head still ?

They cannot see the area right behind them.
This is why we must be careful not to walk behind a horse or pony.

A horse or pony's eyes are on the side of their head. So they cannot see the end of their nose. They cannot see the food they eat ! - isn't that strange ?
